![]() ![]() These are the things that professional photo managers ponder every day. So how do we deal with all the unwanted duplicates that have found their way into our Apple Photos Library? We may choose to keep those or not, but they only contribute to visual clutter and don’’t take up space on your hard drive because they are created virtually. Or a black and white version that just looks cool. Maybe a cropped version for our kid’s school. Keep in mind that we’re talking about unwanted, redundant duplicates, not the deliberate cropped or altered versions we make in Photos for creative reasons. VERSIONS OF A PHOTO ARE NOT THE SAME AS DUPLICATES You are consolidating old photos from backed up libraries or folders and the photos were different enough (naming, size, metadata, etc.) that Photos didn’t catch them. You are importing a photo multiple times from email, messages or social media. You have shared photos that get shared back to you by email, messages or on social media and you re-import them to your library. You are adding photos by manually drag and dropping photos from your iPhone, SD Card, folders, or other sources that include duplicates or have already been imported. If you are getting actual duplicates in your library then it’s due to one of these things: Yes, if you take 5 shots of every selfie, then those are going to be synced as well, but that’s a different issue. One photo manager posted that a large photo collection he was hired to organize went from 3.2 million images to 280k once all the duplicates were gone.įirst, if you primarily take photos on your iPhone and use the iCloud sync to add them to your Mac, it’s virtually impossible to create duplicates. In the photo management biz it’s not uncommon to work with a collection where 50 - 60% of the image collection are duplicates. Not only for keeping order, but for regaining space. It’s a good question, and one that is a bigger deal than you might think. When people ask me about organizing their photos, one of the first things they want to know is how to eliminate duplicates. ![]()
